Microblogging
Tuesday, March 10th, 2009It is infinitely easier to post a few sentences then a few paragraphs when it comes to blogging. I think this is why I enjoy using Twitter so much (not just the reading part but the tweeting part too), I’m limited to only 140 characters to get my point across. On the one hand it can be a ridiculously hard challenge or on the other it can be like writing a haiku, but in either case I’m still able to tweet and record my thoughts. When it comes to blog posting myself, and I’m sure many others, find it hard to churn out something thoughtful, in depth, and worth reading on a regular basis.
The other great thing about Twitter (and other forms of microblogging) is that they’re so ubiquitous. I can Twitter on the web, from my IM client, from my cell phone, and I can even record my tweets offline and upload them once I find connectivity. With blogging software you’re more or less restricted to sitting at your desk and banging out a post in one or more sittings.
While I try to get my Twitter plugin working again, I’m also going to do some research into microblogging applications for WordPress. Ideally I’d like to be able to be sitting on the beach in Santa Monica, grab my Blackberry, record a short note or two (maybe a 2000 character limit?) and be able to post directly to this website. Not only would it encourage me to blog more (less words + solid thoughts = more content/posts) but it would also allow me to share some of the utter miscellany in short form that one finds on a regular basis on Twitter. Plus who has the time these days to read more then 3 paragraphs?
Another year down, another year to go
Saturday, January 3rd, 2009Microblogging
Sunday, December 21st, 2008This website needs an easy to manage microblogging component. I’m sure there’s a WordPress plugin out there for this. So far I haven’t been able to get Twitter to play nice with the rest of this site, but I feel something like Tumblr would be much better suited.
Gonna get some pictures and a narrative for the roadtrip up very soon!
Some quick things
Tuesday, October 28th, 2008Hot damn, I love the internet. Not two days after I mentioned him here, The Anonymous Production Assistant gave me a small write up about this very page and added it to his blogroll, prostrating me infront of his legions of readers and making me feel just a little more special. This is how the blog-o-sphere works, people! Honor linkbacks, network with the right people, and share the knowledge.
This news creates some issues however. Namely, that I now really need to finish up work on this site. I believe my comments form could use some updating, as well as drafting some general layout tweaks, and actually posting to my “About” section. I’ll also need to, you know, start writing here more than once a week, but that shouldn’t be a problem. The real problem, however, is coming up with something constructive and interesting to discuss every day or so.
My current job has recently been preventing me from devoting the proper amount of time to this site, but the good news is that I’m almost finished with this project I’m cutting together and I’ll be able to spend some hours here soon after it is complete. Subsequent cuts will be posted to my Portfolio in due time.
Finally, I purchased Fallout 3 yesterday, so forget all that stuff I said about putting in work here. See ya in a few weeks!
TEST POST
Friday, October 10th, 2008Yup, you heard right! A new and improved TEST POST is here, fresh and hot, delivered straight to your door.
Want to know more? Well…
Portfolio ho!
Tuesday, April 1st, 2008The lack of news recently has been due to two things. One is the exorbitant amount of homework I’ve had recently, not to mention I’m working on a documentary at the moment, and secondly, I’ve been putting work into the less loved parts of this great website (namely my Portfolio section for the moment). Updates will resume as scheduled once I get a few more things out of the way.
In the mean time check out some of this work I did:
More to follow. Keep your eyes peeled.
I’m convinced Cory Doctorow is a jackass
Tuesday, March 18th, 2008Well no, I’ve never met the guy in person, but something doesn’t rub me the right way about Cory Doctorow. As a frequent reader of boingboing.net I encounter Doctorow’s words and pictures almost daily, which many times I enjoy viewing and feel better informed for having seen, but I can’t help but detect an air of pretension in a lot of what Cory has to say. Also, I don’t think he takes very good pictures. Ongoing series my butt.
To better confirm my theory I googled “Cory Doctorow” and “jackass” and got about 3,000 odd results. One of them was a blog entry I feel like linking for posterity’s sake that concerns Doctorow, a well known copyright reformer, duplicating other writer’s work without permission on his and other websites and essentially profiting off of it through site ad revenue.
Googling “Cory Doctorow” and “suck” also returned almost 55,000 hits, one of which is a website dedicated to the suckiest Cory Doctorow posts on boingboing. How does one measure suck? A better summation of corysucks.com can be found here.
Finally, a small bit of TWiT (ep 135) revealed to me that as a guest on said podcast Doctorow hassled the show’s sponsor, Audible.com, while the hosts plugged the site (Cory doesn’t like DRM). I assume this happened on TWiT 124 which I haven’t listened to it yet and can’t say for sure, but still, that’s a pretty jackass thing to do Cory!
If anything the tech industry, and especially the blog-o-sphere, breeds it’s fair share of characters. I believe Cory has been in the limelight long enough and has made the rounds at all of the appropriate geek events to be considered a public figure, at least among us in the know, so I feel that airing my grievances about him, especially on my own chunk of the world wide web, is fair.
This ongoing series will probably be updated as I see fit. If you or anyone you know has fallen victim to Cory Doctorow’s brand of writing/picturing taking hackery feel free to comment and add your two cents.
UPDATE: It seems that Cory’s reputation precedes him on livejournal. (Thanks for the tip, k!)
Total lunar eclipse tonight
Wednesday, February 20th, 200810pm on the East Coast, 7pm on the West look out your window tonight, weather permitting, to catch a glimpse of the moon going behind the Earth for an hour or so. This will be the last lunar eclipse until December 20, 2010.
